For a variety of reasons, including Covid-19, the number of bishops that have died this year is at a record high.
The previous record was in 2017 with 168 deaths (note that 4 of those were never bishops: a former Abbot; an Abbot Emeritus; and two Prefect Apostolic Emeritus).
The next closest was last year (2019) with 164 deaths (note that 2 of those were never bishops: an Abbot Emeritus and a Prefect Apostolic Emeritus)
Currently for 2020, the count stands at 179 and all of those were bishops.

Anche io sono triste per la scomparsa di tanti vescovi : nella mia vita ne ho conosciuti cinque.Il problema è a monte, cioè nel numero dei sacerdoti. Secondo me oggi il clero APPARE troppo impegnato in campo sociale: immigrati, ammalati, persone sole, eccetera. A questo punto un giovane dice a se stesso : " Se , quando sono prete, mi impegnerò per gli emarginati perchè dovrei diventare prete ? Vado subito, adesso." Ripeto : il clero APPARE impegnato su questo versante. Cosa fare? - Rilanciare lo specifico del prete :Sacramenti, preghiera, adorazione, eccetera (*) e , nel frattempo, formare laici che si impegnino per i sofferenti.
(*) UN Sacramento da rilanciare è quello della Confessione per il quale occorre allestire delle vere cappelle ben attrezzate allo scopo di facilitare la presenza del sacerdote e la voglia di accedere ai laici.- D.Romano Nicolini -Rimini
