Overview: XI (CA, HI, NV) & XII (AK, ID, MT, OR, WA)

Region XI (CA, HI, NV)

Los Angeles is the metropolitan with five suffragan dioceses, namely: Fresno, Monterey, Orange, San Bernardino, and San Diego.

The ordinaries are: Archbishop Gómez (60), Bishop Ochoa (68), Bishop Garcia (64), Bishop Brown (75), Bishop Barnes (66), and Bishop Brom (73), respectively.

Los Angeles has six active auxiliaries: Bishops Clark (65), Curry (68), Salazar (62), Solis (58), Wilkerson (72), and Zavala (60).

Orange has two auxiliaries: Bishops Flores (63) and Mai Luong (71).

San Bernardino has one auxiliary: Bishop Del Riego Jáñez (71).

Bishop Brown past the normal retirement age last fall is likely to retire this year and have a replacement named.

Bishop Barnes will celebrate 20 years as a bishop in March. Also Bishops Wilkerson and Garcia will both celebrate 15 years as bishops in January 2013.

Bishops Clark, Solis, Zavala, and Barnes are all of an age and length of service that they might be considered for other roles.

Not this year, but within a few years after that, this province will likely see a number of retirements: Bishops Wilkerson, Mai Luong, Del Riego Jáñez, and Brom.

San Francisco is the metropolitan with nine suffragans, namely: Honolulu (HI), Las Vegas (NV), Oakland (CA), Reno (NV), Sacramento (CA), Salt Lake City (UT), San Jose (CA), Santa Rosa (CA), and Stockton (CA).

The ordinaries are, respectively: Archbishop Niederauer (75), Bishop Silva (62), Bishop Pepe (69), Bishop Cordileone (55), Bishop Calvo (61), Bishop Soto (56), Bishop Wester (61), Bishop McGrath (66), Bishop Vasa (60), and Bishop Blaire (70).

There are two auxiliaries in San Francisco: Bishops Justice (69) and McElroy (57). Another auxiliary is in San Jose: Bishop Daly (51).

Bishop Cordileone celebrates 10 years as a bishop in August.

Bishops Silva, Calvo, and McGrath are at an age and length of service where they might be considered for other roles.

Archbishop Niederauer reached the normal retirement age last Summer. His retirement and the naming of a replacement is likely this year.

Region XII (AK, ID, MT, OR, WA)

The province is composed of the Archdiocese of Anchorage and its two suffragans Fairbanks and Juneau.

The ordinaries are Archbishop Schwietz (71), Bishop Kettler (67), and Bishop Burns (54), respectively.

There are no auxiliaries.

Bishop Kettler will celebrate 10 years as a bishop in August.

It seems unlikely that there will be any changes in the next year or two with the possible exception of Bishop Kettler, who is at an age and length of service that makes him likely to be considered for other roles.

The metropolitan is Portland (OR) with its four suffragan dioceses: Baker (OR), Boise City (ID), Great Falls-Billings (MT), and Helena (MT).

The ordinaries are, respectively: Archbishop Vlazny (74), Vacant, Bishop Driscoll (72), Bishop Warfel (63), and Bishop Thomas (61).

Archbishop Vlazny reaches the normal retirement age in February and is likely to retire and have a replacement named this year.

The vacant diocese of Baker will also likely receive its new bishop this year.

Bishop Thomas is at an age and length of service that makes him a likely candidate to be considered for other roles.

This province is composed of Seattle, the metropolitan, and its two suffragan dioceses: Spokane and Yakima.

The ordinaries are, respectively: Archbishop Sartain (59), Bishop Cupich (62), and Bishop Tyson (54).

There is one auxiliary in Seattle: Bishops Elizondo Almaguer (57).

No changes seem likely in the next couple of years with the possible exception of Bishop Elizondo Almaguer who is at an age and length of service that he might be considered for other roles.
